Constructions of Ideology:
a view of the Academical Village from Monticello
Less than three miles separate the University of Virginia’s Academical Village from Monticello, but in spite of their proximity, these two sites are rarely presented in parallel. Monticello and the University of Virginia were built as expressions of Jefferson’s aspirations for the young nation: both constructions express confidence, the value of education, and celebrate connections to the surrounding landscape. This research explores the connections between the two sites and the benefits of viewing the projects in tandem. As members of the UNESCO World Heritage List under the Thomas Jefferson thematic nomination, the Academical Village and Monticello occupy unique places on the roster as the only private American residence and only American university, respectively.
